According to experts Costa Rica has more than 200 volcanic formations that date more than 65 million years. Nevertheless, only about 100 show some signs of volcanic activity and only four or five are considered active volcanoes. Most of the volcanoes in Costa Rica are located in the north of the country and in the central highlands. Costa Rica car rental 4×4

The volcanoes are considered one of the most important destinations in the country as they are part of its biodiversity.

They play a key role in the landscape and due to them, the Costa Rican soil is rich in several minerals and very fertile. This is why the country has green forests that support its amazing fauna and wildlife. Rent a car in Costa Rica

Additionally they are amazing recreational grounds with many activities that include hiking, white water rafting, sport fishing, surfing, boating, swimming, kayaking, horseback riding, camping, mountain biking and exploration.

The volcanoes of Costa Rica can be divided into three volcanic range systems. The Guanacaste Range boasts the Rincon de la Vieja, Orosí Volcano, Miravalles Volcano, and Tenorio Volcano & Arenal Volcano. The Central Volcanic Range is made up of the Poás Volcano, Barva Volcano, Irazú Volcano, and Turrialba Volcano. The Talamanca Range has only one volcano, the El Viejo.

The Irazú Volcano is known for its stunning green blue lake that lies in one of its craters. It is the country’s highest volcano and it has a broad summit, vegetated flanks, and a history of frequent eruptions going back to 1723. The soil on this volcano is very fertile, its slopes are lush and green with plenty of forestation and pasturelands for grazing cattle. The trails leading up to the summit are also amazing and shelter many exotic and beautiful animal species.

The Poás Volcano has a boiling acid lake and is one of the most active in the country. It is a broad, well-vegetated volcano with a summit area containing three craters along a north-south line. It is one of the most prominent natural landmarks. Poás eruptions often include geyser-like ejection of crater lake water. Regular tours of this volcano can be arranged any time. However, the best time to come and experience the Poás Volcano’s majestic beauty is during May through November when the weather is good and you can actually take a look into the volcano’s active crater.

The Arenal is one of the most famous volcanoes in Costa Rica. It has a perfect volcanic cone and it is a wonderful site that surrounds the landscape of the Arenal National Park.

The Miravalles has an altitude of 2,208 meters. The only reported historical eruptive activity was a small steam explosion in 1946, although high heat flow remains and a geothermal field is located within the caldera.

Turrialba, is located in the southeast and is a large vegetation-covered stratovolcano located to the northeast of Irazú volcano. Turrialba has been inactive since a series of explosive eruptions in the 19th century that were sometimes accompanied by pyroclastic flows. Nevertheless fumarolic activity still continues at the summit craters.
